Students in The School of Innovation (SOI) Writer’s Club were visited by nationally recognized poet, Honey Bell-Bey this week.
Honey Bell-Bey is a motivational poet, writer, educator and community advocate. She has performed, directed and choreographed Spoken Word performances internationally and has received numerous awards and accommodations for her service and activism for utilizing poetry as a tool to unite communities around issues in social justice and equity. Bell-Bey currently lives in Cleveland.
While on her visit to SOI, Bell-Bey spoke to about a dozen students in the Writer’s Club about how she used poetry as an outlet to express her feelings about challenges she encountered while growing up. She also spent time reading the students’ work, giving feedback and motivating students to continue writing.
The SOI Writer’s Club recently published their first collection of work, called ‘Masks.’ Some of the students have also performed their pieces as part of a series through Dayton Youth Radio on the Yellow Springs radio station, WYSO.
