Health Center Grand Opening -- people wait outside to tour

More than 1,000 patients have already visited the newly constructed Health Center at Springfield High in the facility’s first semester open to the public.

The Springfield City School District opened a School Based Health Center (SBHC) in Fall 2024 to support the health needs of the District's students, parents and the Springfield community, with Rocking Horse Community Health Center as the health center's provider of services. The idea to create a SBHC was derived from community feedback regarding ‘Access to Care’ that was given during the design of the District’s most recent Strategic Plan.

In the first semester of the center’s operation, the majority of appointments have been mental health visits and well checks.

Services provided at the health center include same day sick visits for SCSD students, chronic care management, well child visits, women’s health and wellness, vaccinations, mental health services, patient advocacy and sports physicals.

“Rocking Horse is happy with the pace. We were hopeful this would be the case and are pleased with the outcome,” said Amanda Ambrosio, Rocking Horse Executive Director of the School Based Health Center. “We knew the need existed in the community, and we are grateful the community has embraced the center and is utilizing the services.”

“This is continued proof that the students and families in this district can benefit from additional access to medical, mental health – and soon vision services,” said Anita Biles, SCSD School Based Health Center Coordinator. “The health center’s success depends upon the community trusting us to provide care to their children and families, but also believing in the mission of what we have set out to do. When our students are healthy, they are more likely to be in school and become successful. This health center is a win-win for everyone.”
