The Springfield City School District is proud to celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The annual awareness campaign in October aims to educate people about disability employment issues and bring to light the many contributions of America's workers with disabilities.
This dedication to inclusion and education is illustrated by the Springfield High School Transition Program, which currently serves approximately 40 students with disabilities. Students in this program begin their freshman year by exploring a wide range of careers in the Practical Assessment Exploration System (PAES) Lab and learning basic employability skills. As students get closer to graduation, they work to narrow their career interests. At the junior and senior level, students work on tasks in a specific field of interest. This year, seniors enrolled in the program are assisting at community job sites three days a week with the support of the Transition teacher and a paraprofessional.
The Transition Program would like to thank the following employers for their participation in work-based learning and their inclusion of students with disabilities:
Second Harvest Food Bank
Courtyard by Marriott (downtown Springfield)
SCSD Print Shop
Clark Early Learning Center
