A Kenwood student stands with a flag over his heart

Hundreds of Springfield City School District students were directly involved in activities that paid tribute to those who have served in the country’s armed forces.

Kenwood Elementary kicked off the morning with a school-wide program featuring student speakers, the Springfield High School Marching Wildcat Band and Drill Team and the SHS MJROTC Color Guard. Kenwood student speeches centered around the differences between ‘Veterans Day’ and ‘Memorial Day’ and the history of Veterans Day.

The program took time to honor the community veterans in attendance, including several Kenwood staff members who are also veterans. Veterans were treated to refreshments and cards from Kenwood students.

SHS Chamber Choir members also performed this morning at the annual Veterans Day Memorial Service at Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield.

Warder Park-Wayne Elementary Librarian Sheri Ehnie received even more cards for veterans from students in her building, and delivered them to local restaurants today to give to any veteran who is dining out for the holiday.
