Students in the Springfield City School District are spreading kindness and gaining a valuable understanding about the impact of serving others this holiday season by participating in several projects that benefit the community.

Elementary students in the District’s Gifted program have been putting service learning into action by packing ‘blessing bags’ to be distributed to those in need. Students began by bringing in donations. Then, they proceeded to pack more than 100 bags with hygiene products such as combs, tissues and toothbrushes, non-perishable snacks and cold weather items, like hats and hand warmers. The students also took the time to write an encouraging note to include in the bags, such as ‘You are strong! I hope you have a great day!’ The blessing bags have begun to be distributed to organizations that support others, like the Nehemiah Foundation.

Students assisted with deliveries, as well sorting and organizing the incredible volume of donated items. The Toy Shop has historically helped to provide holiday presents for nearly 1,000 Clark County families each year who would not have been able to afford them otherwise.
