Fulton Elementary School students are literally marching to the beat of their own drums.
The school has created a new after school opportunity for students by forming Springfield City School District’s only elementary school level drumline.
Fulton’s Principal, Deborah Howard, said the idea originated from her background and love of music and came to fruition when the school was recently given the funds to purchase percussion equipment.
There were about 20 students who tried out for the drumline earlier this fall and have earned their spot in the inaugural group. The drumline’s ultimate goal is to perform at a local parade in the spring.

Although Springfield High School has a drumline as part of the Marching Wildcats Band & Drill Team, Howard says earlier exposure to music will only benefit her students in the long run.
“Music is math. Music is reading, so all of those content skills that we are teaching each day – they can bring them to life in the drumline.”
