Lagonda Elementary School students have spent the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day participating in a class project that connects the hearts of people all over the country to their classrooms.
Through the power of social media, Lagonda second and third graders set a goal to receive a Valentine card or letter from every state in the country. When they receive a card from a new state, students put a heart-shaped sticker on a map to track their progress.
The students have received a total of 43 cards and letters from 29 different states – even receiving a Valentine from a woman in California who attended Snowhill Elementary, another school in the Springfield City School District.
As of this week, the students still need cards from the following states: Hawaii, Alaska, Arkansas, Missouri, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Maine, New Hampshire, Idaho, Rhode Island, Vermont and Maine. The classes are hopeful to fill in the blanks on their map before Valentine’s Day!
